High earners can enjoy a work-life balance too

Is it possible to have it all? Future Life Wealth Management's divisional director of operations Keeley Woodcock has been considering how to achieve a truly harmonious work-life balance...

HIGH earners frequently discover that they have little free time to enjoy the fruits of their labour...

But having a good salary doesn't mean you have to give up the things in life that are worthwhile - like vacations and hobbies as well as socialising and family time.

So, what's the secret to finding that elusive balance and giving your all both at work and at home?

Work out what matters to you

Consider what feeds your spirit and brings you joy when you're not working.

Maybe it's working in the garden, enjoying some music, playing with the kids or going out with friends.

Once your priorities are clear, you'll know exactly what to strive for.

Manage your time

High pay is frequently correlated with a rigorous schedule, but it doesn't have to take over your life.

Gaining control can be facilitated by establishing clear limits, such as adhering to set working hours and refraining from checking emails after hours.

Naturally, there are times when this is difficult, but even little actions like using a project management plan or online planners, or even just turning on your email's "out of office" feature when you log off each day, can have a significant impact.

Be flexible

Recent years have seen a massive transformation in the structure of the workplace, with many individuals now enjoying previously unheard-of levels of flexibility.

You might be able to follow suit, for example, by deciding on your core work hours or reducing your workweek from five to four days.

Alternatively, you may work multiple times a week from home and allocate the time you save on commuting to other interests and responsibilities.

Invest in self-care

You don't want to work yourself to death... and accumulating large wealth without experiencing any improvements to your standard of living isn't very satisfying.

Therefore, don't consider self-care to be an extra.

If you want to give your all every day at work, you must make time for enjoyable activities that allow you to unwind, rejuvenate and recharge.

Self-care can take many different forms, such as making sure you get enough exercise and sleep, as well as eating healthily and drinking plenty of water on a regular basis.

To ensure that you are both physically and psychologically prepared to handle your task, figure out what works for you and stay with it.

Delegate and outsource

It’s easy to feel weighed down by the pace of modern life, and the list of tasks and responsibilities at home can soon mount up.

But you don’t have to bear the load yourself.

For example, you could free up precious hours at home by hiring a cleaner or gardener, or delegate tasks at work to trusted members of your team.

Help is frequently available - so make certain you use it.

Define what success looks like to you

For many, pursuing a high salary at the expense of everything else is all that matters and their main measure of success.

But that’s not true of everyone.

Instead, some work to achieve a decent income so they have the means to enjoy a happy, fulfilled life with a sense of security and freedom.

We’re all different, so don’t be swayed by someone else’s idea of what success looks like, if that doesn’t reflect what you really want out of life.

Seek financial advice

Managing your finances can be difficult for people on any income - but those on high salaries can often face unique financial challenges.

It’s therefore a good idea to speak to a regulated financial planner with experience of working with high-net worth individuals.

With their specialist knowledge and expertise, they’re ideally placed to help you maximise your wealth in a tax-efficient way and work towards your long-term goals.

You can then spend time concentrating on what really matters to you and truly enjoying the rewards of your hard work.
