Aligning your spending with your values

What drives our behaviour? And what influences where we want to spend or invest? Jillian Thomas takes a look.

A few weeks ago I spoke to investment guru (and he of the red braces off the telly) Justin Urquhart Stewart about ethical investments or ESG.

I know that many of our clients literally want to put their money where their mouth is. They want to know that the investments align with their values. ESG stands for ethical, social and governance, and for many people those values are important.

So, I was interested to see a study that looked at values around the world and analysed just what values are important for people. The survey of 500,000 people in 152 different languages identified 56 values that influenced human behaviour. The top value was ‘family’, with five out of nine regions (including Europe) ranking it the most important. Next came ‘relationships’, then ‘financial security’ and ‘belonging’.

‘Material possessions’ were about halfway down the list overall, but highest in Europe. ’Community’ ranked fifth, but was higher in Africa and Central/ South America than elsewhere; ‘personal growth’ came in at sixth, and ‘personal responsibility’ tenth.

Values are personal, but it is interesting to see there are common themes around the world too. And for many of our clients, while return on investment is important, there are other considerations to take into account.

Where you invest your money is a very personal decision and one we can help you with. Please get in touch if you need advice about aligning your investments with your values.
