Just what is leadership?

Later this week I will be speaking to students about leadership. My talk ‘Personal leadership – from disaster to leading change’ is part of an event by Sheffield Hallam University Business School leadership forum.

I will be talking alongside other esteemed leaders, managing directors, CEOs and founders about the importance of good leadership. The day-long event is entitled ‘Disruptor or innovator, campaigner or catalyst, revolution or evolution. How will you change the world?’

Preparing for the event got me thinking about just what does make a good leader? I am sure I could write a book on the subject! But rather than do that, here are a few thoughts, a few things that I have learned.

A good leader leads. A good leader does not just manage the day to day. A good leader does not micro-manage their team, rather they trust their team to get on with the day to day.

I believe in bringing out the best in people and bringing in the best people. A good leader needs a good team. And a good leader needs to value that team and inspire that team and train that team. I send my staff on training. I give them the tools to do the job. I believe in bringing on the next generation and inspiring the next generation.

In the financial world where the average planner is 57 and male, I feel I have a duty to bring on younger people; to think about the future of the industry. Leadership is about the future; managing is about today.
